- [Temporary Closure of Shearwater for Sailing](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/temporary-closure-of-shearwater-for-sailing/): There were two positive tests for blue-green algae at the lake this morning and this afternoon Longleat Estate informed the club that there is to be no sailing until further notice.  Access to the lake grounds will probably be the same as last time so you can go in to work on or collect boats or use the Clubhouse.

The access gate remains locked and so the booking system should be used to enable access. Please book at http://www.shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/events/ Sailing may be cancelled if less than three people have booked.
- [Sailing resumes 9th May](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/sailing-resumes-9th-may/): Sailing will restart on Sunday 9 May and all sailing sessions must be booked HERE On Sundays the first race begins at 11am.  Sailing will also take place on Tuesdays From 11 May to 7 September with a race starting at 6.15pm. Social sailing on Sundays and Tuesdays will also be possible but there must be at least two boats on the water at any time to provide a buddy system) Toilets can be used in the Clubhouse but masks should be worn indoors and sanitiser used. - [Still Waiting.......](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/still-waiting/): The club is still waiting to hear from the Longleat Estate about when we can re-open and the access is currently blocked with locked barriers. The theme park is said to be re-opening on 12th April so we may be able to do the same. Keep checking here or on our FaceBook page for updates.
- [Winter Shutdown](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/winter-shutdown/): With the blue green algae preventing sailing and now the English lockdown, the committee have decided to begin the annual winter shutdown of the club a month earlier than usual. Members are reminded that due to the terms of the lease, boats should be removed from the dinghy park by 31st December. Sailing will restart (conditions allowing) on Sunday 7th March.

- [Duties](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/duties-2/): So with this lovely ‘Spring like’ weather it is that time of year I start to nag everyone for their time to do duties OOD or Safety Boat. We have divided the year up into three monthly periods. This means that everyone must do at least one of the duties in this time period. At present there is no Safety boat crew for the first day of sailing and no OOD for the second weekend sailing. - [Working Parties](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/2199-2/): Working parties will be held on Saturday 16 February and Sunday 24 February.  Start at 10am. This year there is minimal outside work to be done so we need you to bring your marigolds rather than your gardening tools! Come and spruce up your club for the new season and resumption of sailing on March 3rd.Members are also reminded that boats should not be returned to the dinghy park before March 1st.

No casual sailing is permitted until further notice. Sailing is therefore on this Sunday subject to the inspection by the OOD (see below). Everyone who sails, or their parent or guardian if a child, needs to read the RYA_Blue_Green_Algae_Guidance and sign the SSC Blue Green Algae consent and risk statement before going on the water. Whilst Alkmaar no longer travel the event marks the gratitude of the people of Alkmaar for the help that they received from Bath following World War 2. Some have referred to this as an event where the first leg is sailed on a pond with the next round sailed on a ditch ! - [January Walk at Shearwater](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/1577/): Thanks to Colin for organising a great walk on Sunday. 14 members set off on a bright sunny walk, in and around the woods at Shearwater. Unlike some of our sailing Sunday’s, the weather was perfect for walking, the company was good, what more could you want. Next events are the working parties 7th and 21st February. - [Blue-Green Algae Update 30th August 2014](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/blue-green-algae-update-30th-august-2014/): We have now been informed by the Environment Agency that the latest testing of the water at Shearwater  has shown numbers of the Blue-Green Algae (Microcystis) below the threshold level where they advise land owners to take precautions. As the levels detected have been below the threshold for three consecutive weeks of testing the Environment Agency do not plan to continue with weekly testing. Although weekly testing will not continue Blue-Green Algae has been detected and the Environment Agency have asked us to remain vigilant and should the presence of scum be detected then we should advise them accordingly. - [Shearwater Summer Open Regatta & Barbecue Sunday 10th August 2014](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/shearwater-summer-open-regatta-barbecue-sunday-10th-august-2014/): Our Open Regatta is open to all including visitors and will start at 11am with a series of races of interesting and varied courses. The day will finish with a barbecue where cooking facilities will be provided together with a variety of salads but Members and visitors are to provide their own food to cook and drinks. Soft drinks and teas and coffees will be available. This is a great social event and we hope to see you all on the day whether to sail or to watch/join in with the BBQ.

Entry fee is £10 per dinghy and tea and cakes will be provided following the second race as part of the entry fee.

Thank you to all those who generously donated items for the sale, home made cakes and their time. Hopefully we can make this an annual event at the Club. Items remaining after the weekend were donated to Dorothy House to raise money towards the work of care and support they provide within our community.

- [Social](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/social/): Annual Dinner Dance and Awards Ceremony In addition to racing, there are Social events organised during the Sailing Season. We start the year with a pre-season working party day, where we do a spring clean on the clubhouse, the dinghy park and jetty. The season is then begun with a fitting-out supper, usually an informal meal  followed by some entertainment eg. skittles, barn dance or quiz et.c. - [Facilities](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/facilities/): The single story clubhouse with views across the lake is equipped for hot & cold refreshments on race days (Sundays) as well as most other social occasions and provides a comfortable club room, galley and changing rooms including hot showers.          Several social events are held throughout the year, making use of the galley.         Launching is from a concrete slipway leading to a jetty extending into deep water enabling sailors to easily launch and prepare boats.   Only Bona Fide Shearwater club members and their guests are allowed to use the clubhouse facilities.
- [Rental](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/rental/): Use of Rental & Club Owned Boats We currently have 2 Comet Duo doublehanded boats, used during sail and race training courses, but otherwise available for members to rent per half or full day – in order to trial such a craft prior to a possible purchase, further practice skills learnt on a course, to try out an alternative boat to one normally sailed, or to just ‘sail’ for a while. For further information on rentals either read the details on the club notice board or contact any committee member.
- [Sailing](https://shearwatersailingclub.co.uk/sailing/): Racing is the prime activity of the club and the members, with encouragement and assistance is always available to those wishing to just sail or join in the race programme. Novice and junior members are especially welcome and encouraged. A wide variety of dinghy class are sailed. The most popular double handed being Enterprise,  Merlin Rocket, Albacore, YW Dayboat, GP14, Mirror and Lark. Single handers include Laser, Comet, Topper and Solo. The 45 acres of Shearwater Lake, bounded by Azaleas and Rhododendrons, forms part of Lord Bath’s Longleat estate, within the village of Crockerton and two miles south of Warminster.
