Blue-Green Algae Update 26th July 2014

We have now been informed by the Environment Agency that the latest testing of the water at Shearwater had shown numbers of the Blue-Green Algae (Microcystis) had reduced to below the threshold level where they advise land owners to take precautions. Whilst it is good news levels of the Blue-Green Algae have reduced they are still present and we will therefore continue with current precautions and restrictions.

The Environment Agency will continue to monitor the situation and advise the Club accordingly.

We will continue with the precaution of restricting sailing to those aged 14 and above and all those who sail must confirm they have read the RYA Guidance Leaflet Blue-Green Algae and have signed a declaration or been given parental consent by signing same on Junior Members behalf.

A hose pipe with fresh water will be available for washing off kit and boats and a stock of waterproof plasters are provided in the Clubhouse.

For your information we attach a further copy of the information leaflet produced by the RYA referred to above.

Sailing is an “Assumed risk, water contact sport” that may carry risks. Members should be aware of and accept these risks, and be responsible for their own action and involvement.

Should you wish to discuss any of the above further then please do let me know.

In the meantime we will continue to monitor the situation.

Ladies & Juniors Trophies Day Sunday 29th June 2014

Following the success of previous years we will once again be holding our combined Ladies and Juniors Single Day Trophies event at the end of this month. This has proved to be very popular and I recommend that if you have not entered before then to make a date in your diary now and for those who sail double handers to look at making arrangements for a crew. The Junior Trophy is open to any Member aged 16 or under. There will be three points races for each Trophy with the best 2 of 3 to count.

Shearwater Trip to Roadford Lake 7th & 8th June 2014

Its that time of year again…summer has finally arrived and its time to head off down the A30 not forgetting trailer and boat !!
As previously we will have the pleasure of the CVRDA for company so lets make it a good one. The Lakeside field is booked as is the BBQ for saturday night we just need you to make the weekend complete. Go on… this is your chance to stretch out, hike the boat flat and go for it… you know it makes sense.

Situated on the Devon/Cornwall border, Roadford is a great inland sailing venue set in lovely countryside.

The club have arranged a weekend trip which is open to all members. CVRDA will also be there for the weekend, so it will be a great chance to socialise and race. There will be organized racing and/or the opportunity to just sail the lake, which extends to over 730 acres.

Camping is available by the lake, with showers, hookups etc. at a very reasonable price. (If you require power, please book direct).  For non-sailors there are walks around the lake and access to some stunning countryside.  We will have the lakeside area of the campsite as usual.

This is a great chance to sail on a large inland venue and to socialise with other club members.  Provisional programme is as follows:

Arrive Friday evening

Saturday   10.00   Briefing

Picnic for all somewhere on the lake

2.00   Race

3.00   Race

Evening Barbeque, (barbecue provided, bring your own food and drink).

Sunday  Opportunity to race with Roadford sailing club, or just sail!

Travel time is approx. 2.5 hours from Warminster and very easy. From the club take the A350 south then the A303 which becomes the A30 and continue past Exeter and Okehampton until you see the brown signs to follow to Roadford Lake. Be aware the slip road is very close to the first sign! Cross the dam and continue round to the watersports centre.

Costs – launch fee £10 per boat per day.  Camping £4.50 per person per night.  Hookup extra.

Dogs are permitted.

It would be very helpful if we could have an indication of numbers in advance and therefore would be grateful if you could let us know via this link
